About the workshop: Explore the fine art of silk painting with René Shoemaker, a France-based American artist who will guide us as we examine historical and contemporary silk paintings and develop new skills. Our creative experience begins with planning our projects and investigating color while integrating our individual design aesthetic with the natural qualities of silk and dye. We will transfer the design onto silk, then familiarize ourselves with resist and various methods of applying dye. Each workshop participant will create a painting on a 22” hemmed silk square that can be worn as a scarf or displayed as a wall hanging.

Discover more of René Shoemaker’s art at reneshoemaker.com.

ADA NOTE: The studio is accessed by descending one flight of stairs.

Hand painting on silk is an ancient art with a rich history from India, China, Japan and France. The process of silk painting begins with stretching silk on a frame, sketching or transferring the design onto the silk, mixing dye colors, and painting with a brush. This is exactly what we will do in the class together.

Each workshop participant will create (and take home) their own painting on a 22” square hemmed silk that can be worn as a scarf or displayed as a wall hanging.

All supplies will be provided. All you need to bring is the inspiration and a readiness to create beauty!

No experience necessary; all levels welcome.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
